250 Years Ago: The Day America Assembled an Army for Liberty

Two hundred and fifty years ago, brave patriots were deep in the fight for independence. On June 14, 1775, the Second Continental Congress established the Continental Army. Shortly after, George Washington was appointed Commander-in-Chief.

Exactly two years after the formation of that army, on June 14, 1777, Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States. That’s why we celebrate Flag Day on June 14 each year.

Today, we remember the brave patriots who stood up, took up arms, and laid the foundation for a free nation, and we celebrate the flag that has flown over every generation of Americans since.

Join your fellow citizens in proudly flying the American flag, the enduring symbol of our liberty.
