Competitive elections matter, even when your candidate doesn’t win.
Republicans may not have prevailed in Legislative District 26 or Blaine County this election, but our candidates provided an important service to voters: They forced their opponents to explain what they stand for, defend their records, and tell voters how they intend to govern.
We were pleased to see that accountability in all three legislative races, as well as the races for Blaine County Clerk and County Commissioner. Unfortunately, several other county officials faced no opposition in the primary or general elections and avoided the scrutiny that comes with a competitive campaign:
- Muffy Davis – County Commissioner
- Jim Williams – County Assessor
- John David Davidson – County Treasurer
- Eric Demment – County Coroner
This isn’t about agreeing or disagreeing with these individuals. It’s about giving voters a choice and holding elected officials accountable.
Competitive elections are essential to a healthy representative government. They force candidates to answer difficult questions, defend their decisions, and earn the public’s trust. Regardless of who wins, voters benefit.
If you’re frustrated with this year’s election results, the most important thing you can do is vote. But there’s another way to make a difference: Consider running for office yourself.
In 2028, voters will elect all three Legislative District 26 seats, along with four Blaine County offices: Sheriff, Prosecuting Attorney, and County Commissioner Districts 2 and 3.
Our community needs more people willing to step forward and give voters a choice. If you’ve ever considered running, reach out to the Blaine County Republican Party. We’d love to help you get started.
