Across Blaine County, families already pay thousands of dollars every year in property taxes. But property taxes don’t just affect homeowners. They often show up in higher rent, too. Working families, renters, and retirees on fixed incomes feel these increases the most.
In recent years, voters have seen more levy requests from different districts. Often, these proposals are presented as urgent needs with warnings about reduced services or staffing if additional funding is not approved. That can make it difficult for voters to evaluate each request on its own merits.
At the same time, local governments make budgeting decisions every year about how to use the resources they already receive. That’s why many voters are asking a simple question: Have existing resources been fully prioritized before asking for more?
Libraries, schools, emergency services, and community programs are important to Blaine County families. Strong communities depend on these services. At the same time, many voters believe that responsible government also requires clear priorities, transparent budgeting, and careful stewardship of taxpayer dollars. Both can exist at the same time.
Before asking taxpayers for more, leaders should show they’ve made the most of the tax dollars we already pay.
