Resolution in Support of Freedom of Speech

WHEREAS, the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America covers the essential liberty of free speech, stating in part that “Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech…”; and

WHEREAS, freedom of speech is crucial in a democracy; and

WHEREAS, protecting freedom of speech is essential for the discovery of truth; and

WHEREAS, threats to this fundamental freedom are being experienced by members in our community and are escalating; and

WHEREAS, freedom of speech is being pushed aside in favor of plans to eliminate so-called “hate speech,” “misinformation,” and the promotion of “cancel culture” which is increasingly censoring citizens and violating the free exchange of ideas, thoughts and speech; and

WHEREAS, the labeling of speech as “hateful,” or “discriminatory” or “harassing” because it presents a different point of view is the antithesis of free dialogue.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Blaine County Republican Central Committee calls on the citizens of Blaine County to contact their elected officials to demand they stand for the right of all to peacefully speak without fear of government intimidation or retribution; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Blaine County Republican Central Committee’s priority is to elect local representatives who will defend the United States Constitution and First Amendment rights; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Blaine County Republican Central Committee shall transmit this resolution by including it on the Blaine County Republican Central Committee website, publishing it on social media channels, and sending it to all city, county and legislative representatives. In addition, a letter will be submitted to the editor of the Idaho Mountain Express.
